Arguably opera’s biggest star, Luciano Pavarotti, has died in Italy last night after being diagnosed last year with pancreatic cancer. Pavarotti was hospitalised yesterday, with spokespeople confirming his condition had worsened.
Pavarotti’s career was diverse, and his stardom was worldwide. Breaking out of the Opera house, Pavarotti appeared on Saturday Night Live, won five Grammy awards, and attended the Kennedy Center Honors with Jack Nicholson and Julie Andrews.
He is perhaps best known as one of the Three Tenors, an opera group he formed with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras. Pavarotti was 71.
